Impressions
This wonderful romantic comedy directed by Andy Tennant, stars the lovely Drew Barrymore as the little Cinder girl in the fairy tale story "Cinderella". While the basic premise of the story deals with pushing away conventions of a fairy godmother and rats turning into horses, the movies leaves behind a cramped feeling that features many characters (mostly underdeveloped) and one star (Barrymore). All the secondary characters seem to break through at moments, but the sheer size of the ensemble dilutes their performances. Not to say that the acting is not good, Barrymore gives a fine performance, mixing in clipped sentences and upturned edges to simulate an English accent, and Anjelica Huston in a tailor-made role as stepmother does one better. However, Huston's role, like that of the hunky prince (Dougray Scott), is something of a shadow in the background of Barrymore's brilliance. Or dominance I should say.
| Despite of the lack of focus on the surrounding cast (or maybe because of it), Drew Barrymore is once again endearing, emotive, willful yet caring. She cries a bit too, which must undoubtedly make this movie a must see for Drew fans. All in all, she has proved that The Wedding Singer was no fluke, and that she can act in romantic comedies without the 80s hairstyle and American accent. |  |
